One of the strengths of First Presbyterian Church is its music ministry. Led by Dr. Larry Smith, professor of voice at the University of Southern Mississippi, we offer a full range of opportunities for those with strong and developing musical gifts. Our worship choir utilizes both congregants and university students to lead our congregation in worship on Sunday morning. Likewise, our adult bell choir plays at a number of services, offering their talents to the congregation through musical song. Our organist, Dr. Sam Porter, is widely recognized in the American Guild of Organists as one of the finest organists in the country; he plays on a beautiful tracker organ that fills our sanctuary with beautiful tones for God’s glory.
We also have an excellent children’s ministry program, coordinated by Mrs. Loleeta Rhett, who also serves our congregation as an accompanist and our Sunday evening pianist. We offer children’s choirs from four years old to sixth grade in an age graded fashion; they learn music as part of our Wednesday night program. Many of these choirs are led by Mrs. Kerrin Hightower, a talented musician in her own right. The goal of these children’s music programs is to prepare our children to be worshippers of God and enjoyers of his praise.
